Hi! I am so excited to introduce my healthy lifestyle, food, and nutrition blog. It has been quite the journey that has led me to this point. I wanted to use my first blog post as a chance to introduce myself and to let you know what you can expect as a follower of this blog. First things first, here is a little bit more about me.
I was born in South Africa and moved to the USA with my family when I was just under two years old. Prior to my 18th birthday I moved seven times with my family. I spent the majority of these years in Northfield, MN and most of this time was spent in the pool as part of my high school swim team. After high school, I decided to move down to Memphis, TN to attend Rhodes College. Post college I made the decision to move up to Chicago, IL and took a job in marketing and event planning. For just over two years I enjoyed being independent and working but ultimately, I realized that I wanted to find a career that I was passionate about.
During this time, I joined a boot camp and became a group fitness enthusiast. I decided to make my health a priority and while I had found a great fitness routine, I was trying to understand the nutrition aspect of a healthy lifestyle. In search of nutritional guidance, I started scouring the internet to find answers. Instead, all I found was conflicting information and more confusion. Unsure what to do, I decided to find out—who are the experts in nutrition?
This led me to find the real experts, with the education and experience to back up their nutritional advice, registered dietitians. That’s also when I decided to take the leap of faith and pursue a career as a registered dietitian. It didn’t take long to find out that this choice was easier said than done. In the Chicagoland area, there are only a few master’s degree programs for nutrition and really only one that was ideal for a career changer like myself, which also included the required supervised practice hours needed to sit for the registered dietitian exam.
After a year of taking night classes, while working full time and applying to University of Illinois in Chicago, I was accepted into the program!
Fast-forward two and a half years and I have completed my masters in nutrition and passed the registered dietitian exam. Now, my goal is to provide a resource for others seeking nutrition information like I was so many years ago. Since there are so many blogs out there providing simply antidotal nutritional advice, I think there is a real need for more nutrition and food blogs out there that also provide nutrition guidance based on science and responsible research.
On my blog, I want to provided delicious recipes for meals that I would actually eat along with nutrition information so that followers learn why I make the food choices I do. Along with recipes and nutrition information, I want to also share other aspects of my lifestyle. If you decide to follow me on Facebook or Instagram you will see that when I travel, I eat and drink what I want. I don’t think pretending to be perfect all the time helps anyone. I will try to always be honest with you and show you that you can be healthy and enjoy your life.
When I’m not in the kitchen cooking up new recipes, I am hanging out with my husband, walking my dog (a Rhodesian ridgeback named Nelson), teaching fitness classes at Shred415, planning my next vacation, and exploring the city of Chicago with my friends. I would love to hear from all of you, please tell me what questions you have for me and topics you would like me to write about in future blog posts in the comment section below!
